Is chiropractic care safe for me and my baby?

No known contra-indications.

Chiropractic evaluation and treatment during pregnancy may be considered a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms that affect pregnant patients. There are no known contra-indications to chiropractic care throughout pregnancy. Chiropractic care has been well utilized for decades by pregnant women all over the world to help them feel more comfortable during pregnancy and childbirth.

A common misconception is that chiropractors use ‘heavy’ adjustment techniques on their pregnant patients that put undue pressure on the body and more specifically, on the abdomen. Adjustment and other techniques used on pregnant patients are actually very gentle. Techniques that we use in and around the abdomen and pelvis are gentle and do not put undue pressure on the abdomen or on your baby.

Making sure you’re comfortable during treatment.

Our chiropractors are also careful to avoid postures that are uncomfortable for women who are pregnant. For example, from around the end of the first trimester, for obvious reasons, many women will feel uncomfortable (either physically or mentally) laying face-down. After the first trimester, we use a belly pillow to make sure when you are laying on your belly, there isn’t pressure being put on your baby. This pillow is also helpful if your chest is tender throughout the pregnancy. When required or requested, we have a bigger pillow to protect your larger baby bump and keep you comfortable! You’ll love that you can safely lay on your belly during appointments!

Chiropractic has a good track record over many decades of helping women who are pregnant to not only feel more comfortable during pregnancy, but also in helping to reduce back pain and difficulty in labour. Many midwives and obstetricians now see the benefits of chiropractic care and either support or recommend that their pregnant patients receive chiropractic care during pregnancy.
